OBITUARIES
John C. (Max) Gombatz, 89, of New Britain, died Monday January 26, 2009 at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford, CT. Born March 3, 1919, he
lived all of his life in New Britain and was the owner of Gombatz Market on Stanley St. in New Britain for many years. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Anna (Kettner) Gombatz, who died in 2005.
John was a 1937 graduate of New Britain High School, and went on to serve in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945. He was a member of St. Peter Church, and St. Peter's Men's Society. John enjoyed traveling to Canada, Europe and around the U.S. after retirement. He spent his Summers with Anna at their lake cottage in Moodus, CT, was a lover of dogs and a depression-era saver of everything, including a 1971 Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado. His great-nieces and nephews will remember a generous man who called them "Lucy" and never failed to produce a quarter from his pocket.
John is survived by nephews and nieces Richard Huber and Janice Washburn of New Britain; Joseph Wonish and his wife Charmaine, Robert Wonish and his wife Doris, and Teresa Weir, all of Missouri; and Donald Wonish of Florida
Funeral services will be held Thursday with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at St. Peter Church 98 Franklin sq. New Britain. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 8:00 A.M until the time of the Mass at the Farrell Funeral home 110 Franklin sq. New Britain. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Connecticut Hospice 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405. Members of the St. Peter's Society will meet for a prayer service Thursday at 9:00 A.M. at the funeral home.
