Obituary of Karl J. Poglitsch
Karl J. Poglitsch, 85, of New Britain, passed away peacefully Monday (May 20, 2024) after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in New Britain, the son of the late Michael and Emma (Gombotz) Poglitsch, he graduated from New Britain High School and proudly earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Following high school, Karl served in the United States Navy aboard the USS McGowan, and then worked for Skinner Valve where he retired after 33 years. To stay active in retirement, he worked part-time for Quest Diagnostics.
Throughout his life, Karl enjoyed competitive roller skating, golf, bowling, softball and bingo and was a lifelong NY Yankees fan. His love for the outdoors was evident as he spent many hours tending to his vegetable gardens, taking meticulous care of his yard, coaching little league baseball and spending summers with his family and friends at Lake Pocotapaug in East Hampton.
Karl will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 58 years, Mary Ann (Wischenbart) Poglitsch, his daughter Lenora and her husband, Richard Barnes of Lebanon, two sons, Karl Poglitsch, Jr. and his wife Jocelyn of Higganum, and Brian Poglitsch of New Britain, his grandchildren Hannah and Samuel Barnes, and Devin Poglitsch; two sisters, Helen Sulik of New Britain and Theresa Tierpack of Southington, several nieces, nephews, cousins and his faithful friend, Otto. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Michael Poglitsch.
Funeral services will be held Friday (May 24, 2024) at the Farrell Funeral Home 110 Franklin Sq. New Britain. Visitation will be Friday from 10:00am to 12:00pm followed by prayer and military honors. Burial will be private.
