Tom was my colleague at PCS and my first friend in the US. He was a supportive, compassionate and wise fried, who taught me so much. I am devastated to hear his passing. When I last talked to him during the COVID lockdown, I felt like we never missed a beat, we could just continue our friendship and conversations after a two-decade gap. I am so sad that he couldn't enjoy his well-deserved retirement longer. I was always hoping that one day we bump into each other in an art museum or at the Shaw Festival. Thank you, John, for thinking of me and sending me the article about his passing and please accept my deep, heartfelt sympathy.

Mr. Orefice was by far one of the best teachers I ever had. I was not a model student, but for Mr. Orefice, I sat in the front row, engaged in class, and completed my assignments, because I truly respected him and his insights, and I didn't want to let him down. He taught books that I was actually interested in reading, and awakened my love of Graham Greene. I still have all the books he assigned. As a young queer person, it was so important to me to have Mr. Orefice as a teacher, and I remember reading Howard's End for class and being delighted to learn that the author, EM Forster, was gay, which we discussed at length. Mr. Orefice was also so, so funny. It was a joy to watch his reactions when a student said something wildly off-base. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing, and I am honored to have been taught by him. - Paris, PCS 2018

Mr. Orefice was my 11th grade English teacher and helped write my college recommendations. He was an amazing teacher and person, I was so saddened to read of his passing in the PCS newsletter. May he rest in peace and know that his students will always remember his lasting impact!

I was so saddened to hear of Mr. Orefice’s passing. I was a student of Mr. Orefice’s at the Professional Children’s School in the early aughts. I can still feel his kind presence, and I remember his patience as he led me and my fellow students through the Iliad and the Odysee at 7am! It was a small class of just three or four students, several of whom were new to the country and just learning English while studying music at Julliard. Since the language was new to these students, Mr. Orefice expertly taught us the rhythm and cadence of the poems and had the students apply their musical knowledge to help them understand the words. It’s a testament to his skill that he was able to teach ESL & native English speakers such a complex text with ease. He was a wonderful teacher and a kind man. I wish peace to his husband, family, friends, and all who loved him. I will keep each of you in my heart. Kindly, Julia Shand Skinner, PCS 2006

I first met Tom 50 years ago at Fordham University. He and John were a constant in my life, as one of the dearest couples I know. Tom was funny, smart, and sweet. And full of surprises—I had no idea until recently that he was also a talented painter. I wish I had witnessed him at work in the classroom—I know he was an exceptional teacher. I already miss him so much.

Mr. Orefice was a kind and patient teacher. He helped us anxious teens find joy in reading, and gently guided us through the high school years. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
