John or Mr Downes as we called him as kids out of respect when we saw him while building long lasting friendships with the entire Downes family is and will be remembered fondly for his huge smile, welcoming handshake, quick and witty remarks and zero tolerance for anything less than the truth, especially when it involved activities bordering on right vs wrong. Patty and I are saddened with John's passing. He was a wonderful person who did have the wonderful life, wife and family as described in his tribute obituary. In my travels around New Britain and elsewhere, he was universally admired. In my conversations with him, he always expressed concern and interest about others. Genuine is the word that comes to mind when reflecting upon John. May he rest in peace.

I and the Sullivan family are deeply saddened by Mr. Downes's passing. He was always full of life and enthusiasm for whatever adventure he had to take on. He was warm and welcoming to me both in Connecticut and Florida, and I will miss seeing him on the golf courses in both states. I never met anyone who loved and adored his whole family more.
