Obituary of Carlos S. Vilas
Carlos “Carl” Vilas of New Britain, CT, passed away at the Hospital of Central Connecticut on Wednesday January 18, 2023, after a brief illness. He was 87 years old. Born in Bombarral, Portugal on July 4, 1935, he was the son of the late Raul and Isacandida (Simao) Vilas.
Carl spent his early years in Hartford, graduated from Hartford Technical School and attended the University of Hartford. After serving in the United States Army, he began his career as a self-employed builder, carpenter and real estate broker. Always a consummate professional, he took pride in his work.
He was a member of Saint Maurice Church for over fifty years, a supporter of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Hartford and a member of the Portuguese Club of Harford. An avid bowler in his younger years, he belonged to many bowling leagues in the area. As a man of integrity, patience, and a sense of humor, he built many treasured friendships over the years. Carl was a deeply spiritual man, whose strong faith sustained him in his final days.
In addition to his wife of 52 years, Lorraine (Sudano) Vilas, he had a strong commitment to those he held most dear, especially his daughter, Cara and his “most precious blessing” his grandson, Ethan. Grandpa loved Ethan and driving him to school, going to movies and being called “The Chauffeur”.
Carl also leaves behind his aunt, Aida Bicho and cousins, Arminda Ferreira, Jack Batalha, Tony Batalha, and Carlos Bicho. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his in laws, Anne and Anthony Sudano. We would like to thank Carl’s oldest friend of more than 70 years, Harold Bruscia and his wife, Terri. Your love and support meant the world to us. Not a day went by that you didn’t visit or help in some way during his illness.
Friends and family are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial for Carl on Saturday (Feb 11) at 10:00 AM at St. Maurice Church, 100 Wightman Road in New Britain. Visitation will be at Farrell Funeral Home 110 Franklin Square New Britain, CT on Saturday morning (Feb 11) from 8:30 – 9:30 am. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, 1141 Stanley St.
