Obituary of Nieves Bernal Perez

Please share a memory of Nieves to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Nieves Bernal Giner Perez passed away peacefully on May 30, 2022. She was born on June 5th, 1926 in New Britain, CT to Nieves Giner and Alonso Bernal natives of Spain, and she was raised in El Palmar and Murla, Spain. Nieves is survived by her devoted sisters Concepcion (Conchi) Bernal Baixauli and Enriqueta (Henrietta) Bernal, her devoted children, Joseph A. Perez, Marina Perez, Alicia Perez Goodman, her loving daughter in law, Joanne Bisson Perez, and her devoted sons in law Donald Kerchis, and Marc Goodman. Her six grandchildren, Marissa Perez, Daniel Perez, Carlos Taverner, Marco Taverner, Eric Goodman, Elena Goodman and her two great grandsons Gabriel Taverner and Jack Yuhas: all were the lights of her life. She had so many loving nieces and nephews and people all over the world who adored her. She was predeceased by two baby brothers, her husband of 45 years and the love of her life Joseph Perez and her devoted niece Esther Baixauli Roderick. After living in Spain during her youth, Nieves came back to the USA in 1944 during WWII. She came with her sister Conchita aboard the Marques de Comillas to start life anew for the family. This trip was dangerous and long, to avoid war waters and this emigration was celebrated by The New Britain Herald. The tight knit Spanish community helped Nieves find work as a seamstress at Sokol Brothers and the YardStick. Nieves was a member of the Spanish American Cultural Club and it was there that countless memories were made with family and friends from picnics and dances to San José festivals, and theatrical plays depicting life in Valencia. It was also here that she met the love of her life, Joey Perez. Nieves loved to sing, dance with her love, sew for her family, knit and crochet. She played the guitar and was always the life of the party. Nieves will be remembered for her open arms: the home was always open to everyone and she left us all the legacy of inclusion. Nieves spoke truth to power. She had a huge smile, hugged big, and had an incredible sense of humor. And she was the queen of “madalenes/mandos”. Everything she did, she did for her family who will miss her dearly. Dear Mom, Germana, Grandmama, Moma, and Tia: you are irreplaceable. The family would like to thank the staff of the Hospital of Central Connecticut of New Britain for their most outstanding and gentle care of our mother and our family. A special thanks to Hospice for their support. Funeral services for Nieves will be held on Friday (June 3) with a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 Noon at St. Mary’s Church, 544 Main St. New Britain. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, 1141 Stanley St. New Britain. Friends and family are invited to calling hours prior to the service from 10:30 – 11:30AM at the Farrell Funeral Home, 110 Franklin Sq. New Britain. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Ct Foodshare at 2 Research Parkway, Wallingford CT 06492.
