Obituary of George L. Lombardo
George L. Lombardo, 92, of New Britain passed away peacefully on August 13, 2017.
George was born in New Britain to George C. and Anna (Wohinz) Lombardo on December 16, 1924. He served in the US Army during WWII. He was the proud owner and operator of New Britain Wells, Inc. for most of his life, drilling water wells for homes and businesses across the state. George raced stock cars from the late 1940s through the mid 1960s. During that span, he earned over 125 wins at Riverside Park, Waterford Speedbowl, West Haven Speedway, and several championships at Plainville Stadium. George was honored to be inducted into the New England Antique Racers Hall of Fame in 2008. As one of the few remaining people with detailed knowledge of automobiles from the 1920s-1960s, George loved to spend time with fellow car lovers at RaceWorks in Berlin.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years Virginia and his children MaryAnn Lombardo, Donald Lombardo and his wife Janice, and Nancy Robertson and her husband Douglas. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Daniel Litke and Julia Lombardo. He also leaves his brother Louis and his wife Christine, along with many family members, friends and neighbors.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday (August 17) starting at 9:00 AM at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 10:00 AM at St. Paul’s Church 485 Alling Street, Berlin. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday (August 16) from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at the Farrell Funeral Home, 110 Franklin Square New Britain, CT.
