The last thing my Dad said to me was: "I love you Michael, see you later."
Dad was a one of a kind.
Dad was a great man. Dad was a strong man. He was a kind gentleman with a soft tone. He was the greatest husband, Dad, uncle and grandpa. He was also a great friend to so many people. Dad made people happy; he loved a good joke and was full of one-liners. He was a source of calm reason. Dad loved life so much and he worked hard to make life for his family the best he possibly could.
I love you Dad and because of you I love life. I have learned so much from you. You taught me everything that is important. You left me with so many gifts and tools.
We had so many good times.
I remember getting on a plane when I was 6 years old, Dad and I were both wearing suits and the airline attendants adored us. I remember you coaching my baseball team. At my soccer games you always stood calmly on the sidelines. You were never surprised how well I played and always told me how proud you were of me and how much you loved me. You were always there to celebrate times of growth. I remember how proud we both were the day I graduated from college and you gave me my new business cards. I was entering my career and adulthood with you Dad, there was no other way I wanted it. That will always be the proudest day of my career.
We had great memories like when we went to visit Mike Poynter in Indianapolis. We spent a few days and we were just buddies, we learned to be friends. I loved sitting there with you at the Indy 500 trying to see the cars go by only to end up with neck lash. I remember Fathers Day in 2002; it was you, Kevin and I in Puerto Rico. I asked you; would like to go fishing, would you like to have a cook out or go somewhere. He said go catch a big tuna and we'll cook it all day Sunday. Kevin and I with our good friend Chris Whitley went fishing. The lines were in the water at 6AM and we were not leaving that ocean without a tuna. At 10 after 5 in the afternoon it happened we caught an 80 lb yellow fin tuna and wow did we have fun cooking it. We cooked it every which way all week and by the end of the week Dad said enough tuna lets go get a steak. You were there when I got married and you were so proud that my son was to bare your name.
Dad and I enjoyed talking about vision.
Vision runs deep in the Mangiafico Family. We enjoyed talking about the history of our Family. We talked a lot about my Grandparents Noonie and Nunu, his Grandparents, Uncle PJ, Aunt Helen, Father Paul, Aunt Terry and Uncle Bob.
Dad shared Nunu's story and vision with me. In a way, my grandfather's story is also my father's story. Nunu was a great man, Father and Grandfather. Nunu was a strong man. He took risks; his passion and leadership never relented.
At a young age, Nunu moved from Sicily to the US. He worked hard, learned English, became a beautician, became a businessman and then became a visionary in the Manufacturing world starting with Peter Paul Coil Company. The business morphed into a solenoid valve company, but Nunu never forgot the coil roots. When Peter Paul Electronics began solenoid valve manufacturing there was a parallel effort to pioneer new cutting edge processes to manufacture the coils. My Father was a big part of the vision with Nunu, a vision also shared by my Uncle Paul.
In 1972 Dad moved to Puerto Rico with Mom and Shelly to start Peter Paul Electric, a state of the art manufacturing facility. This was a courageous move to a new land, but he did it. For 37 years, Dad led the longest running manufacturing company in Eastern, Puerto Rico. That's right he has led a progressive company longer than anyone in Eastern Puerto Rico. Dad is a legend.
Dad adapted to changing environments. In fact, he loved all types of technology, be it the mechanical aspects in model shop with Uncle PJ, or the electronics with Tony Riutort or cutting edge computers with my Grandfather Clifford or high tech plastics molds with the Kushi brothers and collaborating on research articles with his buddies at the Society of Plastics Engineers.
Dad loved progress; he had all of the gadgets and always talked about how Nunu would have loved the advancement of technology. Now I understand the grief and deep sadness that Dad felt when his Dad passed in 1979 and how he asked himself how in the world am I going to live up to Dad's accomplishments.
Well, Dad did it all! He moved his family back to CT and teamed up with his brother Uncle Paul to continue Nunu's legacy. He became the Executive Vice President of Peter Paul Electronics for 31 years while running a progressive operation in Puerto Rico. Dad always believed that if we were not in control we were out of control. His ability to bring the vision to reality can be seen by how much manufacturing is done by the two plants.
My Dad was a magnet that good people were attracted to.
Good people like my Godfather Tony Riutort the first General Manager my Dad hired, this was big my Dad began to delegate power. Tony Santos was the first person my Dad hired in Puerto Rico in 1972, he still works there. Good people like Emerito Flores who worked with my Dad to grow Puerto Rico's capabilities in the mid 1980's. Emerito was great friend to my Dad and they loved boating off the coast of Fajardo. When I joined Peter Paul Puerto Rico; Tony, Tony and Emerito showed me how much Dad was respected by the people. I saw firsthand how many people felt that Dad took care of their families.
Good friends like Bob Taylor were attracted to Dad to help achieve the vision of expanding manufacturing technology in both Puerto Rico and Connecticut. When we had trouble with plastics, Dad said let's make our own plastic. And Greg Mitchell, the son of Jack Mitchell who was a part of the new processes that were deployed in Puerto Rico in 1972, said I want in and went to work with Dad. Puerto Rico now makes plastic.
In the 1980's, Dad worked closely with Uncle Paul to lead a new era at Peter Paul, CT. Dad led major expansions here in New Britain when Peter Paul bought the new location on John Downey Drive. He very much enjoyed modernizing the building with Bob Angelo and Julio Garcia. Dad loved engineering and very much enjoyed working with his nephews Mark and Gary. He was proud that Uncle Paul named is eldest son Michael after him; he was honored to be Michael's Godfather.
In 2004 my Dad was a big part of leading the modernization of the Connecticut Facility with Uncle Paul, Mark, Gary, Lisa and I while working with my brother Kevin to modernize and re-invent the Puerto Rico facility.
You might ask why do I tell you all of this, why do I talk about work? In the last couple of days I have spent a tremendous amount of time reflecting on Dad and his life. It became clear that the story of Dad has created a new standard. He figured out how to live up to the standard set by his father multiplied by two, he did the work of many great men in two different places.
Why did Dad work so hard?
Yes he loved it, but most importantly he loved his family. And his Family everywhere loves him dearly.
Dad always yearned the old days when everyone got together during the holidays in CT. The Family expanded and like Uncle PJ; Dad would travel to everyone's house. He loved to go to Aunt Lucy's and Uncle Paul's and spend time with Pam, Doug, Jan, Dave and the kids.
When my Dad was 18 years old he went to Sicily to spend time and get to know the extended family. My Dad adored his time there and left an everlasting impact on our family.
During my travels to Sicily, I learned that Sebastiano, Salvatore, Lucia, and Ninette loved him dearly. Their children Michele, Padre Michele, Michele and Giuseppe are intrigued that Dad was named after their Nunu Michele Mangiafico another very successful and respected man. One of our cousins Michele collaborated with Dad to define the family tree. They yearned to meet one day. Michele was quick to contact us of their deep sadness for Dad's passing.
Ohhh, Dad's love for Mom
When I was in Sicily Sebastiano and his friend Adolfo told me how much Dad missed his girl Ginny. Dad and I talked about this and he said that he loved his time in Sicily but that he missed my Mother so much. Shortly after his return, they were married. Their love for each was so strong. My Mom was the reason Dad lived; he adored her. The day Dad passed he was playing the song My Girl while they hugged and kissed. My Mom was always by his side and loved Dad so much.
Both Mom and Dad were so united and dedicated to us kids.
Parts of Dad can be seen in Shelly, Kevin, Lisa and I. Kevin and Dad were so close and so similar in their get your hands dirty approach. Daddio's little girls Shelly and Lisa were so close and important to him. They had a Father daughter's relationship on steroids. We love our Dad so much and we all carry different traits of his. It takes four of us to represent his legacy. Dad is larger than life. Dad always appeared to have it all figured out. He took complicated projects, diced them up and solved them with us. Everything from emotional challenges to fixing electronics and appliances that most of us would throw away to creating the perfect Custom Kitchen with Mom and his favorite son in-law Sean. He loved to cook with my Mom and we all enjoyed sitting down for time together and fantastic food. This joy has carried onto all of his children, as we all love to cook.
My Dad loved to cook on an open fire, roasting everything especially roasted sweet and hot peppers. Lucky for him, all of us kids love his roasted peppers and it even carried onto his grandchildren, who he loved so much. Kyle and Dad loved peeling peppers together. Kyle cherished his time with his Grandpa and will be able to talk about their time together with his brother Jeremy and sister Nicole. Kyle will also be able to add perspective to my son Michael Mangiafico III, who was born 3 weeks ago. MM3 was born early and Dad got to meet him the day he passed. He told Arelis and I what a great job we did. I am so proud to have my son carry on my father's name.
Dad had a big heart and did the work many in a short time.
His heart endured so much and he is now in a place where there is only happiness. We struggle with why now and why so young; just remember he lived life times two. A good friend said that God must be running a business and needed some help. Dad is united with his oldest son Martin and his Mom and Dad.
Dad, we promise to love life, take care of Mom and each other and to live your legacy. I promise to do my best to take care of our family.
"I love you Dad, and see you later."

Wanted to share my message and prayer to Mike on Father's Day: In the affinity of life where I am, all is perfect, whole and complete. I live in harmony and balance with everyone I know. Deep at the center of my being, there is an infinite well of love. I now allow this love to flow to the surface. It fills my heart, my body, my mind, my consciousness, my very being, and radiates out from me in all directions and returns to me multiplied. The more love I use and give, the more I have to give. The supply is endless. The use of love makes me feel good. It is an expression of my inner joy. I love myself, therefore, I take loving care of my body. I lovingly groom it and dress it and my body lovingly responds to me with vibrant health and energy. I love myself, therefore, I provide for myself a comfortable home, one that fills all my needs and is a pleasure to be in. I fill the rooms with the vibration of love so that all who enter, myself, included, will feel this love and be nourished by it. I love myself, therefore, I work at a job I truly enjoy doing, one that uses my creative talents and abilities, working with and for people I love and who love me and earning a good income. I love myself, therefore, I live totally in the now, experiencing each moment as good and knowing that my future is bright and joyous and secure. For I am a beloved child of the universe and the universe lovingly takes care of me now and forever more. All is well in my world. Goodbye my wonderful boss. Maria. Te quiero mucho.

Dear Ginny and the entire Mangiafico family, I am so very saddened by Mike's passing. He was truly a gentleman in every sense of the word. I was so impressed by his quiet way of making people feel cared for, listened to, and understood. His endless love for his family was so evident in his smile and twinkling eyes every time he spoke about each of you. As a businessman, Mike always demonstrated the utmost integrity and he was truly a man of his word. My father and I so appreciated Mike's character and had such respect for him. All of us at Versa will greatly miss Mike. I understand that the loss you are feeling is beyond words. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers as you face the days, weeks, and months ahead. With my very deepest sympathy, Jan Larsson

Dear Ginny, Shelly, Michael, Kevin and Lisa: There are no words to express how sorry I am for your loss. Mike was taken from you too soon, but heaven is a much brighter place with him in it. While I have not been with Peter Paul nearly as long as most, it didn't take long for me to see that I made the right choice. When I would go to Mike's office or he would stop by my office for a quick business question, the conversation always managed to go off into several directions. Mike once commented that we had a knack for going "off track". It was during these conversations that it became clear to me how much his family and the business meant to him. He truly cherised you all. I will miss him very much. We are all very lucky that he left us such a legacy in his wife and children. God bless you all.

Dear Ginny, I was so sad when I read about Michael in today's paper. He was like a brother to me. I have so many childhood memories of Michael that I think of now and then and they all came back today. Three that stand out are; one school morning Michael came to get Pete and my mom was busy with the girls. I dislike being late and I needed my dress zipped up, so when Michael came I stood in front of him and said zip me up Mike. I think I was in 3rd or 4th grade. He did. The second is; Michael and Pete were in the garage near the ladder to the attic smoking and reading Playboy. My mother was looking for Pete for something. I went in the garage to get my bike, saw them and what they were all about and said the two of you better get out of her quick and hide that magazine and those cigarettes. They heard my mother and shot up the ladder to the attic. I left quick. No one wanted to be caught dead around cigarette smoke when and if she came in the garage. Michael was like another kid in the family to all of us. The third; you and Michael came to visit us on Lowery Drive, Nick was about 7 months old. Michael wanted to give him his bottle so I said sure. Well he just expected him to hold it and Nick wouldn't. Mike asked why not and I said I don't know it's just his thing I guess. Well he looked at Nick and said by the end of this bottle young man you will be holding it yourself. He squished him in his arms until Nick had no choice and from that day on he did. My heart and prayers go out to you and your family. With our deepest sympathy to all. Love, Sue and Al Panarella

Lisa & Michael I am so sorry to hear about your father as you both from our Dale Carnegie Course I know the pain that you are feeling right now. If there is anything I can do for you please know that I am there for you. I remember your father at soccer games watching Lisa & Kristen playing on the girls team and Kevin and Steven playing on the boys team. I always enjoyed his company at all of the functions you kids had when you were younger. Lisa you know I am here for you Love you. Susan
