The first words that come to mind when I think of Coach McCabe is CLASS ACT. I first met Coach McCabe when he joined the Southington High School Football Staff. It was my first year as a high school football coach and I was a 20 year old young man. I rode up to Camp Stowe in Vermont as his passenger, and we sat and talked like we knew each other for our entire lives. Throughout the season we worked alongside one another coaching the wide receivers. At this point Coach McCabe had countless years under his belt as an established coach. He never once let it be known that he probably forgot more football than I even knew at that point. He never tried to outcoach me, or flex his coaching muscle. Everyday he encouraged me and made me feel like I was the best wide receiver coach in the country. He offered me advice and insight when it came to the game and leading others. He hung with us like one of the boys. I learned of his passing by a couple of players we had coached together that year. When I had conversations with one of them a topic of discussion usually included Coach McCabe. Coach would always call our group of guys STUDS! and boy did they eat it up. I wish I could have had a couple more conversations with him. I offer my sincerest condolences to you his family. I hope there is a game being played in Heaven that need more coaches like him.

It is with GREAT sadness that we have learned of Tom's passing. I have known Tom for many years, both as a friend and as my assistant basketball coach. It was an honor to have him working along side of me in Windsor, but more importantly, to have Tom as a faithful friend. Words cannot express the fine person Tom was - his character was unquestionable and steadfast. His family -especially his children- can always be most proud of that! To his children and his family, especially Mr. McCabe and Sheila, my wife, Maryann and I, would like to express our deepest sympathy. We shall ALWAYS have a "special" place in our hearts for Tom.

I knew Tom through Rocky Hill High School athletics. He was one of the most positive people I have ever known. The last time I spoke to him was at one of the last basketball games this season. When I asked him how he was doing, he replied with a big smile "I'm doing great!!". Tom always took the opportunity to tell me how much he loved my boys. He always told me how much he loved to watch my son Michael play ball; how much he loved to watch Mike hustle and give it everything he had. He often told me how Mike's hustle represented what he wanted RHHS sports to be. These are my fondest memories of Tom. I will miss him.

I am very sadden by the news of Coach passing away. I had him for one or two classes in Glastonbury. But what I remember best was Coach being my first boss to my first job. Working at the Country Club as a lifeguard. He gave me the chance to prove myself. I still remember his laugh of joy when we did something fun by the pool. To his family, my dearest sympathies and my thoughts and prayers are with you guys.

To the McCabe family, My name is Debbie (Clough) Viens and I was the cheerleading coach at Glastonbury High School when Tom coached football there. I remember the many bus rides we shared to and from the games, the practices (no matter what the weather), and Tom's constant smile and contagious enthusiasm. He was a good and trusted friend and we shared many stories about our kids and how fast they were growing up. My heart goes out to you all--Tom made the world a better place and I am a better person for knowing him. I will keep you in my prayers and always remember: "When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure."

My condolences to all of Toms family especially to his 4 children. Tommy was a great Athletic Director and friend. He supported his coaches and always had your back. Even while Tommy was battling cancer he did his job well and never stopped working on ways to make Rocky Hill Athletics a place to be proud of. I was so happy and proud that my girls volleyball team gave Tommy his first State Championship as an Athletic Director this past fall. He was so proud of the girls and supported them all the way through to the finals. Rocky Hill will miss Tommy McCabe and we thank him for all that he has done in making Rocky Hill Athletics a place to be proud of. Thank you Tommy!!!

As the former Chairman of the East Hampton Board of Education, I got to know Tom as a true significant asset to the school system. I am truly saddened by the passing Coach McCabe. He was my teacher and lacrosse coach from 1994-1996 at Glastonbury High School. His positive attitude and energy were infectious and he made everyone around him better, whether on or off the field. He effortlessly made me believe that I could be the best player out on the field, and that carried over into other areas of my life. I will never forget one game in particular...we were playing our rivals South Windsor and everyone was playing their hearts out. During our half-time talk, Coach singled me out and said that I was playing the hardest out there and that everyone should take my lead. I was floored by his confidence in me, as I was certainly not the best athlete out on the field that day. But, Coach valued effort and heart and hustle. His confidence in me helped me find my own inner confidence and drive. He did this with very little effort. It was so natural for him to lead his students and players, all while motivating them to do their best. We have truly lost a great soul. On sports awards night in the Spring of 1996, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to speak on behalf of our team. I believe it was Coach McCabe's last season coaching girl's varsity lacrosse at GHS. I stood up and read a poem I wrote about him. As I look back and read it now, it seems fitting to post it here...all of these things are still true about this wonderful man. It is entitled "A Man at His Best": Have you ever met a man Who's voice brings out your best? Who carries strength in his hands? Who's words create success? A man like this gives his all, To teach and lead his team. No matter if they rise or fall, He never forgets their dream. Such a man can get across The worth of winning games. Knowing his team may face a loss, He loves them just the same. On his own, he gains respect, And give confidence everyday. We try to give what he expects To make him proud in every way. As a coach, a man like this Cannot be pushed aside. His presence here will be missed, But will live on in our PRIDE. Coach always stressed the importance of taking PRIDE in what you do. I am proud of the lessons he has taught me and so many other people. My love and prayers go out to his family. We love you Coach and will do our best to continue to make you proud. Rest in Peace.
